Herlda Senhouse was born in Piedmont, West Virginia, USA, on 28 February 1911. Senhouse graduated high school in 1931, one of only two Black students in her class. Denied her dream career in nursing due to limited opportunities, she became a domestic worker.

Later, she married and lived in New York, even residing in Amelia Earhart’s house for a time. Passionate about education, she founded a social club to financially support Black students and traveled extensively throughout her life. She traveled a lot during her life, to Europe, to Africa, and finally to Greece in 2001. When asked about her longevity, she credited a stress-free life, attributing it in part to “not having children.”
