It is with a heavy for LongeviQuest to share that Magda Janssens, the oldest person in Belgium, passed away peacefully on 18 September 2023. She was a Belgian supercentenarian known as the oldest living person in Belgium and the Benelux. Her age was validated by the European Supercentenarian Organisation (ESO) in 2022.

According to the news report, Magda passed away peacefully on Monday evening around 11 PM CET. It was a sad news reported from the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van Troost Residential Care Center in Zandhoven, Antwerp, Belgium.

Care Center Director Charlotte Leemans shared that Magda had a particularly beautiful day when her family visited her on Monday. However, Magda’s daughter, Francine, sensed that it could be their last visit to her. That is why the family was very sad but also greatly appreciates the great times they had with Magda during her life. In the Director’s own words, “For all of us it is not only a personal loss – Magda was very much loved – but also the loss of an icon.” This is how she describes the passing of Magda Jenssens whom she also called as their Our Lady of Consolation.

Magda Jenssens celebrated her 111th birthday on 16 March 2023 while looking so fragile. However, she was actually more optimistic this time rather than when she received the title of oldest resident of the Benelux in November 2022. She was happy to be there as the king and queen had a pot of flowers delivered for her. Her son, André (88 years old), was not able to attend the celebration due to COVID, but her daughter, Francine (76 years old), was present as she was also living in Zandhoven.

Biography

Magda Janssens was born on 16 March 1912 in the district of Deurne, Antwerp, Belgium. On 24 October 1936, she married her first husband who passed away on 23 April 1937. The next year, she remarried on 1 October 1938 and had four children with her second husband.

Janssens passed away on 18 September 2023 in Zandhoven, Antwerp, Belgium. At the time of her death, she was the oldest living person in Belgium and the Benelux at 111 years and 186 days old.

LongeviQuest is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Mrs. Matilda D’Souza, who held the distinction of being India’s oldest known living resident. According to an article published by O Heraldo, she passed away on 17 September, at the final age of 111 years, 327 days.

Mrs. D’Souza was born in Calangute, Goa, India, on 25 October 1911. She married at the age of 19 and had four children. Sadly, her husband passed away approximately 20 years after their marriage. Following his passing, she lived in London for a period, where some of her descendants resided. In 1973, she assumed the role of the founding president of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (SSVP) in Calangute, an organization dedicated to providing medical care to the poor.

Mrs. D’Souza was India’s oldest living person whose age had been successfully validated with documentation, and she was the second supercentenarian overall to pass away in India.

It is with a heavy heart for LongeviQuest to share that Kikuyo Honma, passed away at 112. She was a Japanese supercentenarian known as the oldest living person in Niigata Prefecture at the time of her death on 12 September 2023.

Kikuyo Honma was born on 1 November 1910 in Nunobe, Niigata Prefecture, Japan.

She married a charcoal burner whom she helped in charcoal production after climbing the mountain every day. Simultaneously, she was also tending to various crops in the fields. However, Kikuyo was forced to raise her four children alone after her husband died in World War II in 1945.

At age 112, Kikuyo’s family shared that she was still able to move her wheelchair around as well as feed herself alone. Unfortunately, she passed away from natural causes in Murakami City, Niigata Prefecture on 12 September 2023. Kikuyo was 112 years and 315 days old at the time of her death and was the oldest person in the prefecture since February 2020.

LongeviQuest is saddened to report the death of Máirín Hughes. She was born in Belfast, Down County, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom on 22 May 1914 and passed away in Chapelizod, Dublin, Ireland on 5 September 2023. At the time of her death, Máirín Hughes was the oldest living person in Ireland.

Máirín Hughes had two older and one sister. They grew up in Rathmore, County Kerry, Ireland. In 1924, she moved to Cork where she went on to graduate from University College Cork and work in pathology. Hughes earned a degree in science and a diploma in education at University College Cork and worked in the pathology lab in UCC’s Department of Medicine for 14 years. Hughes was honored with a UCC Alumni Achievement Award in 2018.

She became the oldest known living woman in Ireland, following the death of 107-year-old Nancy Stewart on 10 September 2021.

She became the oldest known living person in Ireland, following the death of 108-year-old Mathew Crowley on 26 August 2022.

She was born in Belgrade, Austria-Hungary (now Serbia) on 6 October 1913 and passed away in Prague, Czech Republic on 1 September 2023 at 109 years, 336 days. At the time of her death, Bedřiška Adamičková was the oldest living person in the Czech Republic.

Bedřiška Adamičková spoke Croatian at home, Italian with her grandmother, and German with her father, an Austrian officer. She moved from Belgrade to Prague, Czechoslovakia, with her mother. She quickly learned Czech in Prague, and then French and English at school. Bedřiška Adamičková graduated from the Faculty of Law in Prague. She never married or had children.

She became the oldest known living person born in Serbia, following the death of 113-year-old Veronika Zsilinszki of Hungary on 20 April 2021. Following the death of 109-year-old Zdenka Kasparova on 13 March 2023, she became the oldest known living person in the Czech Republic.

It is with a heavy heart for LongeviQuest to share that Canada’s oldest living man, Reuben Sinclair, passed away at 111 years old.

He was born on 5 December 1911 in Lipton, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Reuben Sinclair was a Canadian supercentenarian who held the title of being the oldest living man in Canada at the time of his death. He was also recognized as the oldest living veteran of the Second World War. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and was stationed in North Battleford, Saskatchewan.

In November 2021, he already had three living children, six grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Reuben Sinclair passed away on 27 August 2023 in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada. At the time of his death, he was 111 years and 265 days old.

It is with a heavy heart that LongeviQuest announces the passing of Noemia Vieira de Souza, who held the title of the oldest documented living individual in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro. Mrs. Vieira de Souza peacefully departed from this world on August 26, 2023, at the age of 111.

Noemia Vieira de Souza was born on April 6, 1912, in Duas Barras, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She married Manoel Luiz de Souza, and the couple had 8 children.  This Rio de Janeiro resident had 21 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

In June 2023, with the invaluable assistance of her granddaughter Iara, LongeviQuest successfully verified her birthdate, thereby bestowing official recognition upon her as one of Brazil’s oldest living individuals. With a final age of 111 years and 142 days, she held the distinction of being the oldest known Rio de Janeiro resident.

It is with a heavy heart for LongeviQuest to report that Beatrice Jensen, Nova Scotia’s oldest person, passed away at 110 years old. She was a Canadian supercentenarian recognized as the oldest known living person in Nova Scotia at the time of her death.

She was born as Beatrice Kearley on 3 November 1912 in Belleoram, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

Beatrice moved to New Waterford, Nova Scotia with her boyfriend when she was 28 years old. One year later, she married her boyfriend, Abraham Jensen, and eventually had two children.

In 2018, she was hospitalized after breaking her femur at the age of 105. Two years later, she now had five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Beatrice Jensen passed away on 8 August 2023 in New Waterford, Nova Scotia, Canada. At the time of her death, she was recognized as the oldest known living person in Nova Scotia at the age of 110 years and 278 days old.

She celebrated her 110th birthday on 6 March 2022. On the same day, she became the oldest known living person in Greater Poland. She became the oldest known living person in Poland on 26 August 2022.
