Barnes lived a life deeply rooted in education and community. After attending local schools and teaching herself, she became an educator for several years before marrying in 1902. With her husband, a fellow teacher, they raised two children who also pursued careers in education.
Barnes’ faith played a central role in her life, starting with her baptism at Back Swamp Baptist Church at 12. She taught Sunday School for 50 years and was a founding member of the Women’s Missionary Society. Even in her centenarian years, she remained active, holding various positions in the Back Swamp Home Decoration Club and receiving an honorary membership in its successor, The Challengers Club.
Barnes reached her 100th birthday in November 1975 and received double celebrations. Her church honored her with a special tribute and presented her with a silver tray, while another event gifted her with a beautiful floral arrangement and corsage. Even at 107, her family circle remained vibrant, encompassing two sisters, two children, three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Barnes passed away in Lumberton, Robeson County, North Carolina, USA, on 6 May 1986, at the age of 110 years, 182 days.

LongeviQuest is pleased to announce the age validation of Armida Sholar of the United States at age 111. She was born in Sumter, South Carolina, United States on 9 August 1905. Sholar worked as a desk clerk at Wesley Long Hospital in Greensboro. Sholar was a member of Starmount Presbyterian and Westminster Presbyterian Churches. She moved to the White Stone independent apartments in 1978, where she volunteered to tend to the rose and flower gardens. Sholar was a sister, a wife, and a mother to 4 children.
Following a hip fracture, Sholar spent 17 years in the Care Center. One of her hobbies was playing bingo, and she rarely missed playing three times each week. She had cancer twice. She smoked until the age of 103, only deciding to quit after a fall resulted in a broken hip. Despite this, Sholar occasionally indulged in smoking until 2013 when her retirement community implemented a smoking ban on the premises. At the age of 109, she had trouble hearing and seeing, but she was still lucid. On 19 November 2016, following the death of 111-year-old Ruby Clodfelter, she became the oldest known living resident of North Carolina.
Sholar passed away in Greensboro, North Carolina, USA, on 4 April 2017, at the age of 111 years, 238 days. Following her death, Hester Ford (who was only six days younger) succeeded her as North Carolina’s oldest living resident. She was survived by her son Bill, 12 grandchildren, as well as numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Pope attended Pineland School for Girls in the 1920s. She earned her education degree from what was then East Carolina Teachers College in Greenville. She got her first teaching job in Sampson County. Pope then worked at the Harnett County Schools system, teaching fourth through seventh grades. She also served as principal of Long Branch School, which was just a mile from her home. Pope has been a member of Divine St. United Methodist Church since 1942. Over the years, she has taught Sunday school, served on the Board of Trustees, and contributed to nearly every other committee in the church.
Pope passed away in Dunn, North Carolina, USA, on 14 April 2018, at the age of 110 years, 36 days. She was survived by a son and a daughter, 11 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was born as Eliza Jane Brown on 15 March 1867 in Clinton, North Carolina, USA. When she was eight years old, she lived with the Royals, a white family living nearby, for seven years.
In 1890, she was married to a preacher named Isham Underwood. In that same year, around September. their only daughter was born, and they named her Lenorah. It was around 1912 when the couple adopted a baby girl named Minnie.
After her husband passed away, she moved to San Antonio, Texas, in 1973 to live with her daughter. Unfortunately, Lenorah Grant passed away in 1979. Eliza then went to live with her adopted daughter, Minnie Simmons, in Washington D.C., USA.
Mrs. Underwood mentioned that her secret to longevity was to never smoke or drink alcohol and be an active member of the church.
Eliza Underwood passed away on 27 January 1981 in Washington, District of Columbia, United States. Moreover, it was established that she was oldest person ever at the time of her death.

Lexie Ella Settle was born on 22 November 1907 in Wilkes County, North Carolina, USA. She has spent her childhood on their family’s farm where she would later partake in farm work.
On 6 June 1936, Lexie married Paul Holbrook and had two sons with him. Her father and her husband operated a mill before the couple moved to North Wilkesboro, North Carolina in 1944. This is when Mrs. Holbrook opened and operated a small convenience store.
Her husband passed away in 1966 thus making her a widow at that time.
Mrs. Holbrook lived independently until she was 98 years old. In 2006, she fell and suffered a broken arm, so she moved into a North Wilkesboro retirement community. This is where she would spend the rest of her life.
Lexie Holbrook passed away on 30 March 2018 in North Wilkesboro, Wilkes County, North Carolina, USA. She was 110 years and 128 days old at the time of her death, making her one of the oldest living people in the area before passing away.

She is an American supercentenarian known as the oldest living person in North Carolina, USA. The birthday celebration was held at the Family Baptist Church in Warsaw, North Carolina.
Ferrell was born as Catherine Spearman on 10 October 1912 in Warsaw, North Carolina, USA. She was involved in the church when she was young as her mother would make sure that she attends Sunday School every week.
In 1931, she was the valedictorian of her class who graduated from Frederick Douglas High School. Two years later after graduating, she met future husband Walter Williams.
She is currently residing in Durham, North Carolina, United States.

LongeviQuest is pleased to announce the age validation of Annie Wilson of the United States at age 112. She was born in Union County, North Carolina, United States on 20 April 1910. She was the ninth of ten siblings. Wilson grew up on a farm and attended a Fairview one-room schoolhouse Matthews until fourth grade. When the schools consolidated, she transferred to Matthews High School, which served grades 1-11.
Wilson graduated in 1928 and started working at the Southern Bell Telephone Co. in Charlotte. At 19, she married her husband and the couple had two children. Wilson’s husband lost his job during the Great Depression, so they moved in with her parents. They lived on the farm until her husband found a new job making women’s hosiery. Wilson was a housewife for most of her life, but she started working as a sales clerk in a department store once her children were old enough for school. She worked there for 10 years, then worked for an insurance company and a chemical plant before retiring at the age of 65.
Wilson lived in Mecklenburg County her entire life. She lived on her own until she had a minor stroke in her 90s, after which she decided to move into a retirement community. At the age of 112, she resided at the Brookdale Carriage Club in Charlotte.
She passed away in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, on 17 August 2022, at the age of 112 years, 119 days. She was survived by her two children, 3 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. At the time of death, she was the oldest living person in the U.S. state of North Carolina.

LongeviQuest is pleased to announce the age validation of Hattie Hill at 112 years old. She was born as Hatie Louvenia Marsh on 1 February 1911 in Siler City, Chatham County, North Carolina, USA. She had 13 siblings and half-siblings to parents Lawrence (1860-1919) and Cora Marsh (1881-1922).
Mrs. Hill grew up in a conservative Christian family who stressed the importance of being active in the church. At her young age, she became a member of Gees Grove AME Zion Church in Siler City.
During her early adulthood, Mrs. Hill attended First Missionary Baptist Church when she moved to Southern Pines, North Carolina.
She married Robert Lewis, and the couple had a son together, named Robert. The family relocated to Birmingham, Alabama. She joined Convent Avenue Baptist Church in New York in 1945.
At some point in her life, she remarried to Vincent Hill.
Hattie Hill passed away on 25 March 2023 in New York City, New York, USA, when she was 112 years old.
