He was considered as the oldest living man from Shiga Prefecture at 106 years old after Masao Hasegawa died on 5 February 2016.

On 14 April 2020, he became the oldest living man in Japan after 110-year-old Issaku Tomoe of Aichi Prefecture passed. Almost four months later, Shirai passed away on 11 August 2020 in the district of Adogawacho Aoyagi in Takashima, Shiga Prefecture. LongeviQuest extends their congratulations to the family of Mr. Shirai on this posthumous recognition.
