Dr. Manuel de la Peña, MD, PhD—President of the Instituto Europeo de la Salud y del Bienestar Social and a member of LongeviQuest—recently visited 111-year-old Regina Ramos Pauner, one of the oldest living people in Spain.
Regina Ramos Pauner was born in Getafe, in the Community of Madrid, on 23 August 1914. She spent most of her life as a housewife. Widowed at the age of 62, she has four children. Her sister, Matilde, passed away a few months ago at the age of 106.
Dr. de la Peña reports that she has preserved a remarkably sharp mind, with impressive mental agility and an exceptionally positive attitude. According to him, the secret to her longevity lies in staying very active, maintaining a rich spiritual life, and having strong faith. As part of his clinical assessment, he also measured her blood pressure and heart rate.
In her most recent evaluation, Regina Ramos presented optimal blood pressure readings (130/70 mmHg) and a heart rate of 67 beats per minute. She also demonstrated good therapeutic adherence by taking a single antihypertensive medication daily. Notably, she underwent cataract surgery at the age of 92 and hip surgery at 101—procedures that, Dr. De la Peña emphasizes, show that chronological age does not constitute a limitation for surgery or recovery, provided there is a good general state of health and appropriate medical follow-up.
She is currently the fourth-oldest known living person in Spain and the oldest living person in the Community of Madrid.
