LongeviQuest is saddened to report the passing of Marie Guerne. She was born in Lucerne, Canton of Lucerne, Switzerland on 26 March 1912 and passed away in Orvin, Canton of Bern, Switzerland, on 23 February 2024, at the age of 111 years, 334 days. At the time of her passing, she was the oldest living person in Switzerland and was the third-oldest person ever to have died in Switzerland (after Rosa Rein and Alice Schaufelberger). Upon her passing, Martha Furrer-Omlin succeeded her as the country’s oldest living resident. Her age was validated by the ESO on 26 April 2022.

Marie Guerne trained as a dressmaker after completing her primary and secondary education in Switzerland. Seeking to improve her English, she moved to London and further honed her skills at fashion studios in Paris and St. Moritz. In 1937, she got married and had at least one son.

In 2004, she moved to a nursing home but maintained some independence until near the end of her life.

On 16 November 2020, following the death of Alice Schaufelberger-Hunzikerhe, she became the oldest known living person in Switzerland.

On 13 January 2023, at the age of 110 years, 293 days, Guerne surpassed the final age of Hedwig Hosig-Huggler. She then bacame the oldest person ever to have lived in the Canton of Bern.
