BIOGRAPHY

Alice Schaufelberger was born in Reitnau, Canton of Aargau, Switzerland, on 11 January 1908. After finishing secondary school, she moved to her sister in Uster and did an apprenticeship as a saleswoman at the Müller health food store in Zürich. There she met her future husband Jakob Schaufelberger. They got married around 1939, and settled down in Zürich. The couple had no children.

Her husband passed away in 1974. At the age of 91, she moved into a nursing home. Her sister Pauline Herrmann-Hunziker lived to the age of 107 years, 289 days (5 May 1903 – 18 February 2011).

As of her 111th birthday, she was still reading the newspaper and the Bible every day with a magnifying glass.

Alice Schaufelberger passed away in Zürich, Canton of Zürich, Switzerland, on 16 November 2020, at the age of 112 years, 310 days.

On 28 December 2017, following the death of 109-year-old Frieda Binz-Schoch (who was only one day older), she became the oldest living person in Switzerland, at the age of 109.

On 9 April 2019, at the age of 111 years, 88 days, she surpassed the final age of Emma Duvoisin (1886–1997), becoming the oldest (known) Swiss-born person ever, and the third-oldest person ever in Switzerland. On 23 April, at the age of 111 years, 102 days, she surpassed the final age of Andree Fehr-de Boulay (1882–1993), becoming the second-oldest person ever in the country (after Rosa Rein).

Her age was verified by Flavio Stuber, and validated by the ESO on 30 August 2020.

At the time of death, she was 18 days short of surpassing the final age of Rosa Rein, the oldest known person who passed away in Switzerland.
