Biography

Yoshiko Takioto was born in Japan on 25 March 1913.

At the age of 39, she lost her husband, Rinsaku. In 1954, she opened her first sushi restaurant in Nanao. For years, every morning she would carry a basket on her back to the fish market to stock up on fish. Her restaurant was later managed by her grandson.

At the age of 100, she said: “I thought that I couldn’t live without working three times as much as a normal person, so I worked hard with spare time to sleep.” At the time, her hobby was karaoke. At the age of 105, she was attending a day service twice weekly, and at the age of 110 she was attending a day service center with her son.

Yoshiko Takioto passed away on 24 July 2023, at the age of 110 years, 121 days.

Recognition

On 28 March 2013, three days after she turned 100, the mayor of Nanao visited her home to celebrate her longevity. On that occasion, she sang her favorite song to the mayor. Five years later, on 23 March 2018, city officials visited her home to celebrate her 105th birthday. At that time, she said, “Thanks to everyone, I am alive. I am happy.”

At the time of her death, she was the second-oldest living person in Ishikawa Prefecture.
