BIOGRAPHY

Hilario Orozco Lemus was born at a ranch in Las Tortugas, Puruándiro, Michoacán, Mexico, on 3 November 1913. Hilario grew up in poor conditions. His father, Felipe, was a caretaker of animals on ranches while his mother sold soap and salt from her home. They lived in Las Tortugas, Michoacán.

In 1915, Hilario, his mother Josefa and his sister Piedad walked to Cerano, Guanajuato, where Hilario’s maternal grandmother, also named Josefa, lived and they settled there. In 1916, when the influenza pandemic reached Mexico, his mother Josefa became ill with a terrible flu and passed away, leaving him and his sister Piedad with their grandmother Josefa. After a short time, his father, Felipe, came for Hilario and Piedad and took them with him back to Las Tortugas, Michoacán. Hilario and Piedad began going to school in Puruándiro at “La Escuela del Hogar”.

In 1920, when Hilario was 7 years old, his father, Felipe, was struck by lightning and sadly passed away. Hilario worked from a very young age, he took care of livestock such as cows and goats. He also dedicated himself to planting corn.

In May 1936, he married Eloisa Serrano Fonceca. The couple had 11 children (seven daughters and four sons). One of their sons is David Orozco Serrano (born c. 1951), a Priest of the parish of the Santísima Trinidad de Janamuato in Puruándiro. After their marriage they lived in several places including Jacales, Cerano, Puruandiro, Galeana and Janamuato. After a while, they bought a house in Jacales and lived there for a long time. They were married for almost 80 years, until Eloisa passed away on 17 April 2016, one month before their wedding anniversary.

At the age of 111, he has 42 grandchildren, 95 great-grandchildren, and 56 great-great-grandchildren.
