Ushi Makishi

Ushi Makishi (Japanese: 牧志ウシ) was a Japanese supercentenarian who was the oldest living person in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan before her passing. Her age was validated by LongeviQuest.

Biography

Ushi Makishi was born in Nakagami-gun, Okinawa Prefecture on February 15, 1909.

She married at the age of 18 and had her first child in 1929 at the age of 20, eventually having six children.

She worked at a spinning factory from the age of 13 until the end of the war, and after the war, she worked at a U.S. military base in Okinawa.

When she was 96, she moved into a nursing home.

She loved a local Okinawan dish called ‘jūshī’, which is rice cooked with pork. At the age of 113, she enjoyed steamed sweet potatoes.

At age 114, she occasionally enjoyed an Okinawan hand dance called kachāshī.

Makishi passed away in Chatan, Okinawa Japan on July 4, 2023 at the age of 114 years and 139 days.

Recognition

In September 2021, Makishi was reported to be the third-oldest living person in Okinawa Prefecture, after Matsu Gaja (whose age is unvalidated) and Nahi Yonamine.

Makishi’s age was verified by Japan’s MHLW, Yumi Yamamoto, Ritsuko Makishi, and Yu Li, and validated by LongeviQuest Japan on January 14, 2023.
