Sawada was born in Japan on 1 January 1912. It was reported that she possessed a talent for poetry, having won first-prize in the Tanka (Japanese short poetry) contest at the Shimane Prefecture Cultural Festival two times; in 1982 and 1997.
Sawada currently lives in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture.
On 21 June 2021, following the death of 110-year-old Fumi Fujiwara, she became the oldest living person in Shimane Prefecture, aged 109.
Sawada was reported anonymously as Shimane’s oldest resident during 2021’s Keiro no hi (Respect for the Aged Day). In 2022, her name was revealed.
