Biography

Hilda Luck was born in Gillingham, Medway, Kent on 19 February 1914, to parents Leonard and Rhoda Grieveson. Her father was employed at the Chatham Dockyard naval base, where he worked as a fitter and turner; she would later work here as well, becoming one of their first female gas welders. When she was four, her father was transferred to the navy base in Rosyth, Scotland, leading to the family relocating to Scotland for a few years before later returning to their hometown.

While working at Chatham Dockyard, she met her future husband, Ronald Luck, who was employed as a boiler maker. The couple would have two sons together, and moved to Arthur Road in 1964, where Luck has resided for the past 60 years. The pair were together for over 50 years until Ronald’s death in 1998.

An avid gardener, Luck was an active member of the Rainham Fuchsia Society for many years, winning her several awards for her blooms. At the time of her 110th birthday in 2024, she was still living in the same home she had owned for decades, and kept up with current world events through the news. She has traveled extensively throughout her life, having visited countries such as South Africa, Turkey, and The Netherlands. There is a history of longevity in her family, as her mother, Rhoda Grieveson, passed away in 1991 at the age of 103.

Hilda Luck currently lives in Rainham, Medway, Kent, England, at the age of 110.
