Sina Hayes

BIOGRAPHY

Sina Hayes was born in Iredell County, North Carolina, on 27 June 1903, as one of 10 children born to parents James Robert Joyner (1876–1944) and Mary Elizabeth Wooten (1878–1962).

In 1922, she married Raleigh Kinion Hayes (1901–1993). The couple had three sons: Harold Lee (1923–2015), Carlyle, and Joseph W. (1927–1986). Her husband, Raleigh, retired in 1966 as the Superintendent of Construction for Reynolds Tobacco Co., and Sina spent many years at Hanes Knitting Mill, where she made infant sleepers. After their retirement in 1966, they enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and visiting several countries in Europe.

She was a devoted member of Northwest Baptist Church (formerly North Winston Baptist Church) for more than 75 years, actively participating in Sunday School and the Women’s Missionary Union. Her hobbies included cooking, sewing, and gardening, and she especially loved quilting—one of her quilts even won first place at the fair.

Sina Hayes passed away at Brookridge Retirement Home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on 22 January 2016, at the age of 112 years, 209 days. She was survived by her son, Carlyle, as well as eight grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

RECOGNITION

On 4 August 2014, following the passing of Florence McKoy, she became the oldest known living person in the U.S. state of North Carolina. Upon her own passing, she was succeeded by Foy Ingram.

Hayes’ age was verified by Anson Davis, Marco Wikkerink, and Robert Young, and was validated by the GRG on 27 September 2014.
