Maria José Guimarães was born on 16 April 1915 in Barra do Piraí, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to Portuguese inmigrant parents Candido dos Santos Fernandes (9 January 1870 – 29 October 1949) and Maria Ventura Fernandes (14 August 1879 – 21 February 1971).
On 6 February 1932, she married Lauro Guimarães (16 July 1912 – 12 February 1989), and the couple had at least one son, Delio.
She currently lives in Barra Mansa, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
