Luiz Ferraço is a Brazilian semi-supercentenarian.
BIOGRAPHY
Luiz Ferraço was born on 8 June 1918 in Iconha, Espírito Santo, Brazil, to Italian immigrants Ventura Ferraço and Angelina Ferrereis. His life story is intertwined with the history of the development and pioneering settlement of the state of Espírito Santo’s northern region.
At the age of 21, he moved to Linhares, a city he chose as his home and where he built his life over the course of more than eight decades. A man with a pioneering and adventurous spirit, Luiz played an active role in the expansion of the rural district of São Rafael – a place he called home for decades – contributing to the opening of the road connecting São Rafael to Marilândia.
He proudly recalls the days when the work was done primarily by hand, using pickaxes and relying on a truck to inch forward in the construction of the road that plays such an important role in the region today. A writer and a keeper of memories, Luiz preserved a significant part of the history of an era defined by the hard work, courage, and determination of the men and women who helped build the development of Espírito Santo.
In 1948, he married Dorvalina Marchiori (b. 10 August 1928) in a religious ceremony, and together they raised a large family. The couple had 11 children, 10 of whom are still living. Over the generations, Luiz has also seen his family grow with the arrival of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who today celebrate his extraordinary life journey.
In 2013, he authored and published a book called “Verdades de uma Vida – Memórias de um Filho de Imigrantes Italianos”, which provides a historical account of the life of being a son of Italian immigrants. In 2017, at the age of 98, he was given recognition in a ceremony in Vitória by the Vice-Governor of Espírito Santo.
Upon turning 103, Luiz expressed deep gratitude for his life and revealed that he had never imagined he would reach the age of 100. To him, reaching that age had seemed like a distant and unimaginable prospect.
Today, at 108, he continues to reside in São Rafael. His life story represents much more than just extraordinary longevity. It is the story of a man who helped blaze trails, witnessed profound transformations in his region, and built – alongside his family – a legacy of hard work, pioneering spirit, resilience, and memory.
