José María Chávez, a resident of El Coahuayote, Jalisco, Mexico, passed away on 12 July, at the age of 110 years, 322 days.
José María Chávez was born in Mexico on 24 August 1914. As an infant, he lost his mother and was raised by his aunt. He devoted much of his life to agriculture. Although his first marriage was unsuccessful, he later remarried and had children. At one point, he traveled to the United States for work, where he worked on a fishing and cargo boat transporting pineapples. His boss, a Russian, even wanted to take him to Russia to continue working together, but the journey couldn’t be made as the boat wasn’t able to sail that far. He eventually received an American pension.
When asked about the secret to his longevity, he credited a healthy diet, not smoking, staying out of trouble, and getting good sleep.
At the time of his passing, he was the second-oldest known living man in Mexico, after Hilario Orozco Lemus.
