Biography

Karl Sigurðsson was born on 14 May 1918 in the house Rómaborg on Ísafjörður. One year later, his family moved to Hnífsdal and lived there for most of his life.

Karl started his career as a ship captain for 30 years then moved ashore to work in a freezer as an engineer until he was 78 years old.

Karl was a founding member of the Accident Prevention Department at Tinda in Hnífsdal. Last year, when the department celebrated its 90th anniversary, his former colleagues visited him at the nursing home in the spring, bringing a bouquet of flowers to honor his contribution.

Karl’s wife, Kristjana Hjartardóttir, lived to be 95 years old. They were married for over 70 years and had six children, two of whom are still living: Sigríður Ingibjörg and Halldóra.
