Moycullen, County Galway, Ireland — on 23 May, Phyllis Olwyn Furness, the oldest living person in Ireland, celebrated her 109th birthday, as confirmed by several independent Irish news outlets.
Furness was born as Phyllis Olwyn Ryder in the town of Newark, Nottinghamshire, England. She grew up with three siblings and three step-siblings. An unfortunate family dispute in the late 1920s rendered her not being able to see her youngest sister, Freda, who was one year old at the time. Sadly, Freda had died before the sisters could reunite.
In 1981, Furness moved to County Galway in Ireland. Her lifelong passions include music, particularly violin, and dancing. Aged 108, she moved into a care home in Moycullen, County Galway, where she still resides as of 2024.
On 17 January 2024, Furness became the oldest living resident of Ireland following the passing of 109-year-old Kitty Jeffery.
LongeviQuest extends our heartfelt congrautulations to Mrs. Furness and her family following the occasion of her 109th birthday!
