The oldest living resident of Belgium, Mrs. Fernande Courtoy, passed away on May 28th in the village of Ham-sur-Heure, Hainaut Province, Wallonia. At the time of her passing, she was 109 years, 329 days old. Her passing was confirmed by RTL info.
Mrs. Courtoy was born in the city of Thuin, Wallonia, on 4 July 1914. After graduating from school, she studied pharmacy at a university in Brussels until the mid-1930s. She got married in the late 1930s and had three children. Her husband worked as a mining technologist. During the Second World War, she worked in the laboratories of various hospitals. From the late 1940s, she worked in a pharmacy in Charleroi. She retired in 1979, at the age of 65.
She was survived by seven grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Courtoy became the oldest living person in Belgium after the death of Magda Janssens on September 18, 2023, and the last surviving Belgian born in 1914 after the death of Jaak Broekx on October 31, 2023. She held the title of the country’s oldest living resident for 253 days.
