Brown was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on 14 June 1913 (claims 15 June) to Swedish immigrants Victor and Anna Magnuson. She was the eldest of 10 children, and outlived all her siblings. She married federal air traffic controller Bob Brown on 28 May 1938; the couple had two daughters, Kristine and Bonnie.
In Pittsburgh, Brown worked at G. C. Murphy, a chain of five-and-dime stores. She moved to Oberlin, Ohio with her husband in the 1960s.
Brown was widowed in 1990. Following her husband’s death, she moved to Texas to live with her daughter Kristine, who died in 2015. Brown, then aged 102, moved to a retirement facility in Nashua, New Hampshire, to be closer to her daughter Bonnie, who resided in Massachusetts.
At the time of her 108th birthday in 2021, Brown had five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She claimed taking cod liver oil daily as a secret to her longevity. Her hearing had deteriorated by her 109th birthday, but was reported to be in perfect health otherwise. At the age of 110, Brown is the oldest known resident of New Hampshire.
