Maria da Conceição was a Portuguese supercentenarian whose age has been validated by the European Supercentenarian Organisation (ESO). At the time of death, she was the oldest living person in Portugal.

Biography

Maria da Conceicao was born in the village of Rabarrabos, Penela, Coimbra District, Portugal, on 7 December 1904 to António Luís and Maria da Glória. She allegedly witnessed the Miracle of the Sun on 13 October 1917.

On 17 February 1927, at the age of 22, she married David Maria Duarte in Penela. The couple had one daughter, Maria Anunciação. She worked a lot in the fields, for a long time together with her husband and then by herself after getting widowed. She spent most of her life in her native village of Rabarrabos (which changed its name in 1956 to São Sebastião).

At the age of 100, she could no longer live independently, so she moved to the parish of Real in Braga, where her only daughter lived. At the age of 112, she was living in a nursing home.

Maria da Conceição passed away in the parish of Real, Braga District, Portugal on 9 October 2017 at the age of 112 years, 306 days. Her funeral took place in Penela, Coimbra District.
