Biography
Barwise was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, on 6 February 1879 (claimed 1882). Her father was a veteran of the Civil War and her mother ran a boarding house on Hennepin Avenue.
Barwise never married nor had children. She was a legal secretary in downtown Minneapolis for many years. At the age of 100, she wrote to then-President Reagan, and he responded by sending her a birthday card. She was a member of the Christian Science church and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Barwise passed away at Stevens Square Home in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, on 8 July 1990, at the age of 111 years, 152 days.

On 26 February 1990, following the passing of 111-year-old Julia Lyng, she became the oldest (known) living person in the U.S. state of Minnesota.
On 13 April 1990, at the age of 111 years, 66 days, she surpassed Lyng’s final age, becoming the oldest known person ever in the state of Minnesota.
Upon her passing, she was succeeded as the state’s oldest living person by Mary Curley, who went on to surpass her final age on 22 April 1992, becoming the new longevity record holder for the state of Minnesota.
Her age was verified by Jimmy Lindberg, and validated by LongeviQuest on 3 February 2024. While Barwise claimed to have been born in February 1882, several records have been found suggesting that she was, in fact, three years older.
