Benton was born in Golconda, Illinois, on 6 June 1913, to parents Addie Baker and Perry Billington. She graduated from high school and worked as a data clerk for the U.S. Census Bureau in Clarksville, Indiana, until retiring to Florida. At some point, she married Lester Benton. The couple had two children, Sharron Richards and Myron Benton. She was widowed after 64 years of marriage.
A member of the First Baptist Church of Merritt Island, she enjoyed growing roses and was dedicated to helping feral cats find homes and ensuring they were well-fed. Having grown up on a farm, she developed a lifelong love for all animals.
Benton passed away at Farrington House on Merritt Island, Florida, on 10 May 2024, at the age of 110 years, 339 days.
