Mumeno Shirai was born in Japan on 19 May 1904.
Mumeno Shirai passed away in Mitoyo City, Kagawa Prefecture, Japan, on 28 May 2016, at the age of 112 years, 9 days.
On 16 October 2014, following the death of 111-year-old Shizue Matsuzaki, she became the oldest living person in Kagawa Prefecture.
Shirai was paid a special visit by an official from the prefectural government in September 2015 in celebration of Japan’s Respect for the Aged Day. Writing after the visit, the official said that he could feel Shirai’s strength as they shook hands, and that she was so well it was hard to believe she was 111 years old.
Her age was verified by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW), as well as Tzen Wei Tseng, and validated by the Gerontology Research Group on 7 November 2015.
At the time of death, she was the second-oldest person to ever live in Kagawa Prefecture, only behind Yasu Nishiyama. Following her passing, she was succeeded as Kagawa Prefecture’s oldest living person by Tame Aga.
