Margaret Young was born in Skegby, Nottinghamshire, England, United Kingdom, on 22 October 1910. She left school at 14 and began working at the CWS Hosiery factory in Huthwaite, where she said she enjoyed her job and made many friends. In 1936, she married Jack Young in a small ceremony at St. Andrew’s Church in Skegby, and they set up their home on Quarrydale Avenue in Sutton, where they lived for the next 30 years. The couple had a son, John. Her husband was a blacksmith for the Coal Board at Sutton and Bentinck Colliery, and he passed away in 1979.
In 2012, she moved into a nursing home in Sutton-in-Ashfield. She was a lifelong member of St. Andrew’s Church in Skegby, except for a few years at St. Michael’s while living in Sutton. She was also a member of the Girls’ Friendly Society and the Mothers’ Union. Her main hobbies were gardening and reading.
At the age of 108, it was reported that she still loved enjoying a cup of tea and the occasional glass of sherry. She commented that the secret to a long life is to be happy and to have plenty of cups of tea. At the time, she had two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Young passed away at Ashcroft Care Home in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, England, UK, on 18 December 2020, at the age of 110 years, 57 days.
Following the passing of Mary Grace Goddard (2 December 1909 – 8 March 2018) of Newark-on-Trent, she became the oldest (known) living person in Nottinghamshire.
Her age was verified by Dr. Andrew Holmes, and validated by the ESO on 11 January 2021.
