BIOGRAPHY

Manuela Peña Hernández was born on a farm in Los Conucos, near Luperón, Puerto Plata Province, Dominican Republic, on 17 June 1907 (claimed 1905 or 1906). Her parents were José Altagracia Hernández Aragonez (Chepe Santana) and Ana Peña Cueto (Sención). She was the second daughter, and she had three siblings: Paula, Eligia, and Ireneo.

From a young age, she lived in a rural setting, where her life was closely tied to farming and family traditions. She was a hardworking and independent woman, primarily dedicated to agricultural work. Her life was characterized by simplicity: she cared for her home, her chickens, and her plants, remaining active even in old age. For many years, she lived in a house built in 1953, preserving traditional objects and customs.

She married Braulio Pascual González, with whom she had six children: Félix María, José Amado, Paula, León, Ana, and Digna Mercedes, of whom only her youngest daughter, Digna Mercedes Pascual Peña, survived her.

In her community, she was known for her strong, sometimes moody, character, but also for being cheerful, talkative, and lucid. Her religious faith was an important part of her life, and she dedicated time to prayer and her family.

At the age of 105, she was maintaining good health, mental clarity, and a degree of physical independence. At the time, she was reported to have grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and great-great-great-grandchildren.
