Íria Morrudo Castro is a Brazilian semi-supercentenarian.
BIOGRAPHY
Íria Morrudo Castro was born in Ibaré, Lavras do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, on 21 October 1916. The daughter of twelve children, Íria grew up in poverty. Due to the social conventions of the time and the remote location of her home, she never had access to formal education. However, she compensated for her lack of literacy with keen practical intelligence, always stating that her education was the “school of life.”
From a young age, she taught herself to play the guitar, becoming the life of the party at rural dances and celebrations, where she performed regional music that she would later pass on to her daughters. At the age of 40, her life took a turn when she moved to Bagé, where she married Gentil de Jesus Castro. Alongside her husband, she continued to work in agriculture, on various ranches in the Dom Pedrito region. Her life was marked by the discipline of rural work and a diet based on the land’s produce, with barbecue (churrasco) remaining her favorite food to this day.
On her 105th birthday, it was reported that despite having lost some of her hearing and experiencing mild speech difficulties after her last illness, her lucidity and sense of humor remained intact. At that time, she often joked that her longevity was due to “God forgetting about her.”
RECOGNITION
Her age was verified by Gabriel Ainsworth, Iara Souza and Filipe Lopes, and validated by LongeviQuest on 13 May 2026.
