Eiko (Hideko) Kagohashi was born in Yamada-cho, Mizunami City, Gifu Prefecture, Japan, on 20 November 1910. At the age of 21, she got married and moved to Dachi-cho in Toki City. Her husband ran a factory manufacturing Mino ware, a traditional craft ceramic, in Toki City. He also served as the first president of the Toki City Chamber of Commerce and Industry. She continued to support her husband until his death at the age of 95.
In her later years, her hobby was haiku, which she began writing at the age of 85. Even though she was over 100 years old, she still enjoyed going out with her friends twice a month and reading her haiku while looking at the scenery. On her 100th birthday, the mayor of Toki City visited her home and was impressed by how she walked without a cane and spoke clearly. To mark the occasion, she composed a couple of haiku poems. At the age of 105, she resided with her family in a spacious house boasting 16 rooms and two kitchens.
Kagohashi passed away in Toki, Gifu Prefecture, Japan, on 2 March 2021, at the age of 110 years, 102 days.
(Please note that the pronunciation of her first name is uncertain as it is not provided in the sources. It’s possible that her first name may be pronounced Hideko, rather than Eiko.)
Her age was verified by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW), as well as Yu Li, and validated by LongeviQuest on 8 April 2024.
