BIOGRAPHY

Dalcisa Bozzi Carvalho was born in Rio Novo do Sul, Espírito Santo, Brazil, on 4 April 1916. In her youth, she moved to Vitória to pursue her studies. During that time, she boarded at the now-closed Colégio do Carmo, which was located in the facilities later incorporated into the church of the same name in the city center. After completing her studies, she graduated and went on to work as a teacher for three decades, before retiring in 1985.

On 6 November 1940, she married Ademar Azevedo Carvalho, and they had five children. Her husband was a municipal government employee. She is fluent in French.

Her journey at the Port of Vitória began in 1964. After raising her five children, she became involved in the literacy work of her niece, Maria de Lourdes Carvalho, who was teaching bricklayers to read and write. Together, they would climb the hill of Praia do Suá at night to hold literacy classes. The initiative soon came to the attention of Renato Adnet Coutinho, then administrator of the Port of Vitória, who opened the doors of a warehouse at the port so that workers could learn to read and write.

She said that the dockworkers showed tremendous enthusiasm and were eager to learn to read and write. The work was initially expected to be voluntary, but the port eventually began providing a bonus to the teachers. She taught approximately 430 dockworkers, who graduated on 28 January 1965—Dockworker’s Day.

At the age of 110, she had 5 children, 15 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.
