BIOGRAPHY
Joaquina de França Rodrigues was born in Ribeirão Vermelho, in the Pangaré district of the municipality of Quitandinha, Paraná, Brazil, on 6 February 1916 to parents Horácio França and Maria Joana Monteiro. She spent her childhood and adolescence in the same place, working on the land in a subsistence farming system.
On 22 June 1932, at the age of 16, she married Paulino Rodrigues de Oliveira (16 April 1912 – 3 November 1981), a farmer from the same region. They had four children: Raul (1933-1948), Francisco (1934-deceased), João Maria (b. 1937), and Thereza (1940-1949). In 1944, the family moved to Campo do Tenente, Paraná (at the time a district of Rio Negro, Paraná), where they settled and had two more children, Jacira (b. 1949) and Paulo Sérgio (b. 1960).
In addition to her domestic duties, Dona Joaquina was also very dedicated to the art of sewing. She had an excellent clientele, and is still recognized for this today. At the age of 65, she became a widow, and was then cared for by her youngest son (Paulo Sérgio and his wife Lea).
Mentally lucid, she still comments on the two world wars, pandemics, and diseases such as yellow fever and smallpox, with a scarcity of treatment or medication.
Dona Joaquina has always been a woman of great faith in God. When asked what the secret is to living well for so many years, she replies: “Everything passes, be calm and trust in God.” For her family, without a doubt, she is an example of life and a gift from God.
On 6 February 2026, she turned 110, making her a supercentenarian.
She currently lives in Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil.
