Leona Thompson, the oldest living person in the British overseas territory of Bermuda, celebrated her 109th birthday in St. George’s on 11 April.
Leona Thompson was born on 11 April 1917. She grew up near Tobacco Bay in St. George’s as the youngest of five sisters. Her late husband, Walter Thompson, was a painter and interior decorator. They met when he was hired to paint her sister’s house. Though he was 13 years her senior and she was around 21 at the time, they didn’t marry until she was 25. The couple shared 54 years of marriage before his passing in 1996.
She worked for decades as a housekeeper and nanny, remaining in service until the age of 89. Even after retiring, she stayed active, later working as a tour guide at St. Peter’s Church, where she shared Bermuda’s history with visitors from around the world.
On 22 October 2025, at the age of 108 years, 194 days, she surpassed the final age of Myrtle Edness (1914–2023), becoming Bermuda’s oldest person ever.
TNN Bermuda reports that despite being deaf, she remains mentally sharp and fully engaged. When asked about the secret to her longevity, she said: “No stress, eat well, believe in God, and pray.”
LongeviQuest extends warm congratulations to Leona Thompson on her 109th birthday.
