Emma Robinson, the oldest known living person in the U.S. state of Alabama, passed away in Goodwater on 29 March, at the age of 111 years, 48 days, according to Dignity Memorial.
Robinson was born on Route 4 in LaFayette, Chambers County, Alabama, USA, on 9 February 1914, to parents Rufus and Pearlie Tucker. She was educated in Chambers County and earned degrees from Alabama State University and Alabama A&M, driven by her passion for becoming an educator.
Robinson was deeply involved in the civil rights movement, participating in marches in Tuskegee and Montgomery. During one of these marches, she met Steven Robinson, who would later become her husband. A minister, he was called to serve as pastor of Greater Ebenezer Baptist Church in the Knoxville Community, prompting their move to Talladega. Robinson dedicated 35 years to teaching in the Talladega City and County School systems, continuing until the 1970s before retiring to care for her husband as his health declined. The couple did not have children.
Following her husband’s passing, she remained independent, driving herself and living on her own well into her 90s. She stayed in her home until the age of 98. In 2009, she was invited to attend Barack Obama’s inauguration but declined due to the snowy weather in Washington.
On 8 February 2025, she became the oldest (known) living person in the U.S. state of Alabama, following the passing 112-year-old Rosie Cook of Sylacauga.
