Gladys Pennington, one of the oldest living residents of the U.S. state of Washington, passed away on 22 February, at the age of 110.
Pennington claimed to have been born on 17 October 1914, in Deer Park, Washington, as one of four children of Sarah Anne Jones Mills, a Welsh immigrant, and Jonathan Mills, an immigrant from England. However, she was most likely born on 17 December.
At the age of five, she and her siblings were placed in an orphanage in Spokane, where she remained for 15 years until graduating from high school in 1932. Afterward, she earned a scholarship to Kinman Business University in Spokane and later attended Eastern Washington University in Cheney. Eventually, she moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where she applied for a government position at one of the first Social Security offices.
