by Stefan Maglov | Jun 25, 2026 | Death Reports, News

Sr. Colette (Bridget) Hickey, the oldest living person in Ireland, passed away in Cork on 23 June, at the age of 108 years, 143 days.

Sr. Colette was born Bridget Hickey in Barracree Townland, County Waterford, on 31 January 1918. She entered the Good Shepherd Sisters in 1935 at the age of 17. She initially joined the congregation at its house on Clare Street in Limerick. After making her first profession in July 1938, she was assigned to the community at Sunday’s Well in Cork City, where she worked in the bakery and kitchen.

In 1972, she founded Edel House, a shelter for women and children on Dyke Parade in Cork. The shelter was later relocated to Grattan Street, where it continues to operate, providing accommodation for up to 10 families as well as a range of support services.

On 4 June 2026, following the death of 109-year-old Eileen Hynes, she became the oldest known living person in Ireland.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Sr. Colette Hickey during this difficult time.
