Owen Filer, possibly the oldest living man in Wales, celebrated his 105th birthday in Cwmbran on October 19th.
Filer was born in Pontnewydd on October 19, 1919, and spent his entire life in the Cwmbran area. After finishing school at the age of 14, he started working two weeks later for half a crown a week, feeding chickens and pigs at the Cwmbran Gardens Hotel.
In 1940, he was called up to serve in World War II, enlisting in the 9th Battalion of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He was posted to Bombay in 1944 at the age of 24.
He met his wife, Laura, on a rainy night in a milk bar in Llandudno while stationed there for training. They married in 1943 and enjoyed 60 years together until her passing in 2004 following a stroke.
When asked about the secret to his long life, he replied, “I really don’t know. Everything in moderation.”
