Leingarten, Baden-Württemberg — The second-oldest living person in Germany, Hildegard Rau, passed away on July 29th, two days before her 112th birthday. Her passing was publicly confirmed by an obituary on trauerundgedenken.de.

Rau was born in Großgartach (now part of Leingarten), Baden-Württemberg, Germany, on 31 July 1912, as the middle of three sisters. She grew up on the family farm. On 14 March 1936, she married Alfred Rau, and the couple had two children, Else and Hans. Her husband was a farrier and metalworker, and she looked after his apprentices and managed the vineyard.

Rau lived in her own home until her 100th birthday, after which she moved into a nursing home. By the age of 107, her eyesight and hearing had deteriorated considerably, but she remained mentally sharp.

On 23 July, following the passing of 113-year-old Erna Brosig, she became the second-oldest (known) living person in Germany, after Charlotte Kretschmann, who also lives in Baden-Württemberg.

LongeviQuest sends our deepest condolences to the bereaved family and friends of Hildegard Rau.
