Biography

Sata Adachi was born in Japan, on 22 October 1908.

After her husband died in the South China Sea in 1943 during World War II, she made a living by farming while raising her six children (a son and five daughters) on her own.

Until 2015, she lived in her own home in Mooka, Tochigi Prefecture, but moved into a nursing home after suffering a bruise from falling on the stairs. At the age of 108, she was still able to walk with a walker. In 2018, she moved into a nursing home in Yuki City, Ibaraki Prefecture. When asked about the secret of her longevity, she replied: “Vegetarian diet and walking.”

Sata Adachi passed away in Yūki, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, at 7:23 PM on 29 October 2019, at the age of 111 years, 7 days.

Recognition

On 19 March 2019, following the death of 113-year-old Tsukimi Kishi, she was reported as the oldest living person in Tochigi Prefecture, however, she resided in Yūki, Ibaraki Prefecture at the time. Tochigi Prefecture reported her as the oldest living person since she was still registered as a resident of the city of Mooka.

On 30 April 2018, Mitsuko Uesugi, the oldest living person in Ibaraki Prefecture, passed away. Since Adachi moved to Ibaraki the same year, she became the oldest living resident of the Prefecture, although she was registered as a resident of Tochigi Prefecture as well. Upon her death, Shina Seki became the oldest living person in Ibaraki Prefecture, and Matsuno Muroi was reported as the oldest living person in Tochigi Prefecture.
