Matsuno Muroi was born in Japan on 1 July 1909. She lost her husband around 1940, after which she raised their five children on her own.
When interviewed by the Yomiuri Shimbun in 2015, her family described her personality as very competitive. She also had a humorous side, and when asked about her age, she answered: “I’m 30”, making everyone around her laugh. She loved singing, and when visited by the city’s mayor at the age of 109, she sang nursery rhymes to him.
Matsuno Muroi passed away in Nasushiobara, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, on 15 November 2020, at the age of 111.
On 29 October 2019, following the death of 111-year-old Sata Adachi, she became the oldest living person in Tochigi Prefecture.
Upon her death, Hagi Yamazaki (18 July 1912 – 21 May 2021) of Nasukarasuyama became the oldest living person in Tochigi Prefecture.
Her age was verified by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW), as well as Yu Li, and validated by LongeviQuest on 9 July 2023.
