Shigeyoshi Nishijima was born in Japan on 29 September 1914.
At the age of 110, it was reported that he remained independent, operating his wheelchair unaided and eating without assistance, all while maintaining a cheerful demeanor. Caregivers at the nursing home shared that Nishijima drinks nutritional beverages daily and has a fondness for sweet treats, especially cream buns. His adaptability and active lifestyle are believed to have contributed significantly to his longevity.
On 12 September 2024, as part of the Respect for the Aged Day celebrations, the mayor of Kōfu City visited Nishijima to honor him as the city’s oldest resident. During the visit, the mayor presented him with a commemorative gift and commended his health and positive spirit.
Following the passing of 109-year-old Tetsuo Fukazawa (20 March 1914 – 13 September 2023) of Nanbu Town, Nishijima became the oldest living man in Yamanashi Prefecture, at the age of 108 years, 349 days.
His age was verified by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW), as well as Ryohei Asano and Yumi Yamamoto, and validated by LongeviQuest on 18 January 2025.
