Agnes Thompson, the oldest living person in Northern Ireland, UK, passed away in Belfast on 17 March 2025, at the age of 109 years, 196 days. Her passing was first reported by the Oldest in Britain website, which tracks the oldest individuals in the United Kingdom.
Thompson was born on 2 September 1915, to Tommy and Mary Proctor and was named after her father’s sister. She grew up in the family home on Ravensdale Street and attended Euston Street Primary School.
In 1938, Agnes married Rabbie Thompson, and together they had two sons, Roy and Ralph. She was widowed in 1989 when Rabbie passed away at the age of 75. Both of her sons lived into their 80s. Throughout her life, Agnes worked in the local mill as well as in jam, sweet, and Hoover factories.
Following the passing of Jane “Jean” McCullough (29 November 1914 – 16 September 2022), she became the oldest known living person in Northern Ireland, at the age of 107 years, 14 days.
According to the Oldest in Britain website, her successor is thought to be Jane Benington, born 27 April 1917.
