BIOGRAPHY

Ruy de Mendonça was born in Catalão, Goiás, Brazil, on 10 February 1918 to parents Dilly Guimarães Mendonça and Álvaro Paranhos de Mendonça, he was the third of ten children.

As a child, he sang the Brazilian National Flag Anthem—known as the Hino à Bandeira Nacional, which he still sings today—in order to earn money at the first cinema in Catalão, built by his grandfather, Davi Camões Mendonça. In his youth, he moved to São Paulo, where he graduated in accounting, worked in various positions, and entered into his first marriage. From this union was born his first daughter, Dilly Mendonça da Motta, now deceased.

While in São Paulo, he acquired a publishing house together with his brother, Rivadavia. Over the years, he pursued several professions and lived in different Brazilian states. In 1956, he relocated to Rio de Janeiro, where he met his second wife. Their union resulted in the birth of his second daughter, Rosane Mendonça Hissa. Through this branch of his family, he is the patriarch of two daughters, six grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren.

After several years, still residing in Rio de Janeiro, he met his third wife. They lived in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Mar de Espanha, where he worked as a farmer for many years.

In time, they chose to travel extensively and establish residence in several Brazilian states, becoming, in effect, true nomads.

In 2008, concerned about his wife’s struggle with sclerosis, he decided to settle in Caraguatatuba with his eldest daughter and her devoted caregivers. He remained there for approximately 19 years. His wife later passed away, and in 2025, his first daughter, Dilly, died at the age of 80. Rosane, his second daughter, and her husband, Antônio, left everything behind to move to Caraguatatuba in order to continue caring for her father.

On 20 December 2025, he was transferred by ambulance to Areal. Today, he is attentively cared for by dedicated caregivers. He is a remarkable man: mentally lucid, having never undergone surgery in his life, free of illness, and with his organs preserved intact throughout the years.
