Riyō Fujihira (Japanese: 藤平リヨウ) was a Japanese supercentenarian.

BIOGRAPHY

Riyō Fujihira was born in Japan on 28 November 1900.

On 17 September 2009, Kenichi Kanemaru, the Mayor of Tateyama, presented her with a gift of a 20,000-yen gift certificate. Her daughter, son-in-law, grandchildren, and other family members also visited her at the nursing home in the Hirose district of Tateyama, where she was residing.

At the time, and again when she was 111 years old, it was reported that, aside from a hip injury at the age of 99 that required a two-month hospital stay and artificial bone surgery, she had never suffered from any serious illnesses. She was still able to walk independently with assistance from the facility staff and had lived a life largely free from the need for medical care. Having lived at the nursing home for about a year, she was reported to be in excellent health.

On 27 September 2012, at the age of 111, she was once again visited by the mayor. She was still living at the same nursing home, together with her eldest daughter, Yoshie (91), and Yoshie’s husband, Kazu (86). Although she was hard of hearing, she enjoyed communicating with other residents and staff. She was able to feed herself and continued to live a healthy and active life.

Riyō Fujihira passed away in Tateyama, Chiba Prefecture, Japan, in February 2013, at the age of 112 years, 65-92 days.

RECOGNITION

In September 2011, following the passing of Toshi Higano, she became the oldest known living person in Chiba Prefecture. Upon her own passing, she was succeeded by Sato Nagaoka.

Her age was verified by the MHLW, Japan, and validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) on 18 October 2011. The validation was later recognized by LongeviQuest.
