René Aubert was born in Les Écorces, Bourgogne-Franche-Comte, France, on 28 October 1910. After losing his father at a young age, he was raised by his widowed mother alongside his four siblings. He began working as a shepherd on the neighboring farms at the age of 8. The family settled in Les Fontenelles where he and his sister Alice were hired at the Cheval factory. His curiosity and dedication helped him rise to the position of foreman, and he eventually started his own workshop.
Aubert established a successful factory in Maîche that produced synthetic rubies for the Cheval company, employing over 40 workers. He married Léontine, and they had two children. After the Second World War, he purchased a gun shop in Besançon, expanding the business through his extensive social network.
Renowned for his remarkable memory and love of hunting, Aubert often shared vivid stories of his adventures, particularly his memorable hunts in the Haut-Doubs mountains and the Chaux forest. His wife passed away in June 2004. Aubert continued to live in his home in Rigney until a fall eventually led to his passing.
René Aubert passed away in Rigney, Bourgogne-Franche-Comte, France, on 15 November 2020, at the age of 110 years, 18 days. He was survived by his son Guy and his daughter Jeannine, as well as two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
