Oliva Alves Jacobsen was born in Restinga Sêca, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, on 23 April 1908. In her youth, she learned to make cheese with her mother, a task she particularly enjoyed. She also loved crocheting, though declining eyesight eventually forced her to give it up in later years.
She tragically lost her eldest daughter, Noemi, at the age of three in a domestic accident. While her parents were milking the cows, Noemi suffered severe burns from a homemade stove the family used in their home. Due to the limited access to medical care and the long distances between towns, they were unable to get help in time, and sadly, she did not survive. Later, she had two more children: Anette and Ataídes.
On her 108th birthday, it was reported that she was in good health and free from any major illnesses. Her only challenges were difficulty walking and impaired vision in one eye. She still enjoyed helping with household tasks, such as overseeing meal preparation. Reflecting on her longevity, she remarked that she wasn’t sure how she had reached such an age, but believed that her early life in the countryside—before moving to Carazinho—may have played a role.
Oliva Alves Jacobsen passed away in Carazinho, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, on 23 March 2019, at the age of 110 years, 334 days.
Her age is currently under review.
