Madeleine Thomas

BIOGRAPHY

Madeleine Thomas was born in the commune of Marigny-le-Cahouët in the Côte-d’Or department, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France, on 29 June 1910. Her father went to the front during World War I. Her mother had the Spanish flu, but despite sleeping in the same bed, she did not catch the virus at all. At some point, she got married and had children. She worked as a midwife and director of maternity services in several hospitals, including one in Auxerre.

In early 2020, she contracted COVID-19 at the beginning of the lockdown but made a full recovery by the time of her 110th birthday in June. At the age of 111, her vision and hearing were impaired, but by increasing the volume in her left ear, she was still able to hold a conversation.

Madeleine Thomas passed away in Auxerre, Yonne, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France, on 18 August 2021, at the age of 111 years, 50 days.

Her age was verified by the members of Les Grands Centenaires Français and validated by the ESO on 9 February 2021.
