BIOGRAPHY

Helena Powers was born on 9 February 1916 in Apalachicola, Florida, United States, into a family of six children. Her early life was shaped by simple, hard-working roots: her father harvested oysters from the bay, and family meals often came straight from the garden and sea.

After high school, Helena attended beauty school in Jacksonville, Florida. On a chance visit to Lake City, she met Ralph Powers at a gas station, whom he would become her life love, they married six months later, in March 1936. Ralph became a successful Cadillac dealer and self-made millionaire, and also held a political role as a Florida Road Board delegate, expanding their social world. They raised a son, known as Frankie, who later returned to live with Helena and care for her in old age.

Into her late 100s, Helena remained spirited and lucid, often sharing tips for long life that blended activity, enjoyment, and attitude more than strict routines.

She attributed some of her longevity to staying active, eating well, and living a meaningful life.
