BIOGRAPHY
Florence Pomerantz was born in Chicago, Illinois, USA, on 14 October 1916. Her father was Morris Rattner, and her mother, Rose, died during the 1918 influenza pandemic. She had a sister, Sue, and two brothers, Max and Bernie. Her father later married Sarah Mold, with whom he had three children: two sons, Richard and Jules Rattner, and a daughter, Madelyn Fischmann (1925–2021). Morris was a businessman, and the family lived above a dry-cleaning business that he owned.
Florence moved to Los Angeles in 1947 and married Maurice Pomerantz in July 1948 at The Hollywood Roosevelt hotel. After Maurice’s death in 1952, she raised their two sons, Mark and Ron, as a single mother. She ran a successful rental business for more than five decades. In 1976, she became a lifetime member of Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America.
When asked about the secret to her longevity, Florence shared, “It has truly been the love of my growing family. I don’t want to miss anything.” She celebrated her 110th birthday at The Hollywood Roosevelt, the same hotel where she had married Maurice more than seven decades earlier.
