BIOGRAPHY

Ine Atarashiya was born in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, on 6 September 1899.

Atarashiya did agricultural work during her youth. According to her family, she had a tough, persevering character. She wasn’t picky when it came to food. Atarashiya entered a nursing home for the elderly in Hagi City in February 1996, at the age of 96.

Ine Atarashiya passed away in the nursing home in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, on 8 May 2012, at the age of 112 years, 245 days.

RECOGNITION

In June 2009, following the death of 111-year-old Fumi Nonaka, she became the oldest living person in Yamaguchi Prefecture.

Her age was verified by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW), as well as Tom Li, and validated by the Gerontology Research Group on 4 December 2009.

At the time of her passing, she was the second-oldest person to ever live in Yamaguchi Prefecture, only after Sue Utagawa. She was succeeded as the Prefecture’s oldest living person by Kotono Kobayashi (1 February 1903 – 10 September 2012) of Yamaguchi City.
