It is with a heavy heart that LongeviQuest reports that Mr. Tsuneji Ōyama passed away on 30 January 2024 at 111 years old.
On 1 February 2024, on behalf of LongeviQuest, Yumi Yamamoto attended Mr. Ōyama’s funeral. It was held at a quaint temple at the foot of a mountain in Kiyama Town. The funeral was attended by over 100 people, including his family and other local people, along with beautiful flowers that they had offered. Farewell messages were also read during the funeral by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. It was a wonderful ceremony that conveyed how much he cherished and loved his family. He was seen off by his many family and friends as the gentle, enveloping sound of songbirds echoed beautifully.
Mr. Ōyama died of natural causes, as he had been lying in bed a lot since September. He even celebrated his 111th birthday at a hospital located at the same nursing home he was staying at. Mr. Ōyama was still able to eat normally without any signs of complications until his death.

Tsuneji Ōyama was born on 9 January 1913 in Kiyama, Saga Prefecture, Japan.
At age 30, Ōyama left his two young daughters and wife when he was drafted and dispatched to China in 1943. Just before the war ended, he came back to Japan after being ordered to safeguard the mainland. Unfortunately, he was afflicted with a kidney disease that caused widespread body swelling.
At the time of his death, Tsuneji Ōyama resided in Kiyama, Saga Prefecture, Japan. On 23 July 2019, he was recognized as the oldest living man in the prefecture when Tetsuo Shiki passed away. Three years later, he was able to surpass Shiki’s final age to make him the oldest man ever in Saga Prefecture.
