Biography

Miho Matsuzaki was born on 18 April 1913 in Kokonoe, Ōita Prefecture, Japan. After completing elementary school, she attended Iwata Girls’ School (now Iwata Junior and Senior High School) in Ōita City and later worked for several years as an assistant at a post office.

Around the age of 30, she married and raised seven children. After her marriage, she moved to Oguni Town in Kumamoto Prefecture, where she spent much of her life caring for her family and household. After her children became independent, she traveled widely throughout Japan to visit them.

In later years, she moved to Kumamoto City and resided in a nursing home. She enjoyed activities such as pencil painting and composing haiku and made reading newspapers part of her daily routine. Even as a centenarian, she once traveled by plane to Okinawa to meet a newly born great-grandchild.

Matsuzaki was known to prefer foods with a salty flavor. Her favorites included homemade chirashi sushi, pickled vegetables, rice with green peas, and traditional snacks such as okaki and senbei.

Matsuzaki became the oldest resident following the death of Shinobu Hayashi on 25 January 2023, at the age of 113.

Following her death, Setsu Sugahara of Ōzu Town became the oldest known living person in Kumamoto Prefecture.
